Creating a Core Wardrobe on a Budget

January 13, 2011

For the past two days, I have given you core wardrobe tips to help you create a wardrobe you will love. But these are tough economic times and you may not want to spend the money to create a brand-new ten-piece wardrobe.

Budget-Saving Tips

(1) Obviously, you will first want to explore your own closet for anything that fits your energy type and begin building a wardrobe on whatever you find.

(2) And you also can shop low-budget stores such as thrift stores and consignment shops.

(3) Choose one or two colors and build on them to create a wardrobe a few pieces at a time.

Starting Over

But if you know you are going to need to start over, here is a slightly-pared down list adapted from recommendations from StyleYOUniversity.

“With as few as 9 pieces in your wardrobe you can create 20 outfits. The most versatile core wardrobe begins with the following items…” ~~StyleYOUniversity

(1) Two suits (or combination of cardigan and pants if your lifestyle is more casual) in your best neutral shade (solid) (4 pieces)

(2) Two matching blouses (patterned or solid) (2 pieces)

(3) A jacket or cardigan in one of two accent colors you have chosen for your core wardrobe (1 piece)

(4) A skirt or pair of pants in that same color (1 piece)

(5) Blouse in your version of white (your best color) or the other accent color (1 piece)

She suggest that you can get 20 outfits out of the different combinations you can put together. I tried it and I think she is right, thought there may be some combinations you are more fond of than others and thus, are likely to wear more often.

Need to pare down even more than that in your planning? Choose a cardigan, shirt and bottom (skirt or pants) in one color and the same in another color that matches.

Six pieces ~ ten outfits!

Accessories for a Core Wardrobe

January 12, 2011

What’s in Your Closet?

In yesterday’s post, I suggested ten pieces for a core wardrobe, based on Tim Gunn’s list of essentials. But once you have those pieces, how will you pull it all together into a cohesive wardrobe?

Add Accessories

Shoes, scarves or wraps, jewelry, handbags. If you have chosen two or three colors to work with, you will be able to find accessories that you can wear with any of your pieces.

For example, if you have chosen blue, brown and ivory, you may be able to find scarves, purses and jewelry that combines blue and brown (or maybe all three) and if not, go with your strongest neutral color, brown, and look for accent pieces in that color.

How to Plan and Create a Core Wardrobe

January 11, 2011

Nothing to Wear?

Do you ever wander into your closet and feel discouraged because there are clothes in there but it still feels like there is nothing to wear? I used to have that feeling all the time!

There might be a few favorite pieces but because I had not bought them to go together, it was always challenging to try to create an outfit. And there were always several pieces just hanging there, neglected!

Well, once you know your energy type, all of your chosen pieces will mix and match well together because all of the colors will be in harmony.

Still, you might want a guide for getting started with adding pieces you will love.

Ten Essential Pieces

Here is my list, adapted from Tim Gunn’s list of top ten wardrobe essentials…

A dressy dress
A casual dress
Dressy pants
Casual pants
A skirt
A shirt
A blazer or jacket
A sweater or cardigan
A pair of jeans
A coat or heavy jacket

In tomorrow’s post, I’ll give suggestions for accessorizing your new core wardrobe.

See you next time!

The Style Strategy: A Less-Is-More Approach to Staying Chic & Shopping Smart

January 10, 2011

In this book, Nina Garcia writes in response to the economic recession we are experiencing and offers a guide to creating the best wardrobe you can with what you have to spend.

“Step-by-step, Nina helps readers honestly answer three key questions—What do I have? What do I need? What do I want?—before making purchases, so they can effectively eliminate any unnecessary spending.” –Amazon review

I completely agree with her three questions and with her intent to help readers do more with less. My caution is that if you are buying anything that does not match your energy and beauty type, you are not likely to love it and keep it the way you would something that does match.

Resolution: Learn Facial Profiling for Yourself & Identify Your Energy & Beauty Type

January 5, 2011

If you have been reading along, you know that there are four energy and beauty types and though we have all four within us, we each lead with one. Determining which one we lead with can be done in a couple of ways.

(1) You can read the descriptions of each type and see which one seems most like you.

(2) You can read the physical descriptions, including the face shapes and other facial information, and look at yourself to see which one you most closely match.

Both kinds of information are included in the books and the online energy profiling and beauty profiling courses.

But in this video, Carol answers a question of the week about how to learn more about facial profiling and she announces even more resources she is making available to make it even easier to identify your type…

In tomorrow’s post, she offers even more information about learning facial profiling. See you then!

Resolution: Experience More Wonder

January 4, 2011

In mid-November, I read and responded to a blog post that really inspired me. It was by the Deva Coach here. She asked what makes us think and wonder, wonder and think. Here is my response…

“Trees blowing in the wind, the whole world soaked in sunlight, a heart-stoppingly amazing sunset, songs whose lyrics grab my heart, the beauty of my son, asleep, when I check on him at night before I go to bed, seeing something manifest in my life that I only softly intended & had forgotten about, having an intuition prove true, using a healing technique and seeing it work, the changes in my relationships since I discovered my energy profile type, and sometimes, the smell of vanilla in my cup of tea.”

What would it be for you, and how can you add more of it in the coming year? Even more importantly, how can you experience more wonder in a way that is true to your nature?

New Year’s Eve: An Intuitive Message and a Bowl-Burning Ceremony

December 31, 2010

Part Four of the Intuitive Message

Be open to help from others who may be kindred spirits, part of your tribe. You will meet many who could work with you in manifesting your vision.

Preparation will be important this year. Make sure that you have everything you need and that it is all in one place as you begin to take action to manifest your vision. Consider taking the first three months to lay the groundwork or build the foundation for whatever you are trying to create.

Trust your instincts and your ability to accomplish what you are planning. It may turn out to be a lot easier than you think.
